SYNOPSIS
Hollywood 1928. John Gilbert, nicknamed The Great Lover, has had a dazzling rise to fame like Charlie Chaplin or Douglas Fairbanks. But in the course of three years, the best paid actor in Hollywood sinks into oblivion. He had a shooting star career: fast, furious and passionate, bruised by a system and by his tireless conflict with the all-powerful MGM president, Louis B. Mayer. John Gilbert whose life inspired "A Star is Born" (1937) and "The Artist" (2011) embodies, better than any other, the failure of the transition from silent movies to talkies. This documentary brings a fresh look at this myth, and recounts the power struggle that opposed John Gilbert to one of the greatest Hollywood moguls.
